When a child or young person is experiencing mental health symptoms, parents and caregivers often have many questions: What is happening? Where do we go for help? How can I support my child while also caring for the rest of the family?

NAMI Basics OnDemand is a free, self-paced online education program for parents and family caregivers of children and young people age 22 and younger who are experiencing mental health symptoms. The course provides practical information, tools, and support to help families better understand youth mental health and navigate the systems involved in getting help.

NAMI Fairbanks does not currently offer NAMI Basics as an in-person local class. Families in our community can access NAMI Basics OnDemand online through NAMI.org at any time.

What You Will Learn

NAMI Basics is designed to help parents and caregivers build knowledge and practical skills for supporting a young person experiencing mental health challenges.

Topics include:

• Understanding mental health conditions and symptoms in children and young people
• Learning about treatment options and mental health care professionals
• Communicating effectively with your child and other family members
• Preparing for and responding to mental health crises
• Navigating school, mental health care, and juvenile justice systems
• Advocating for your child at school and in health care settings
• Caring for your own well-being while supporting your family

NAMI Basics also incorporates the experiences of parents and caregivers who have navigated similar challenges.

Who Is NAMI Basics For?

NAMI Basics OnDemand is intended for parents, caregivers, and other family members who provide care for a young person age 22 or younger who is experiencing mental health symptoms.

A formal diagnosis is not required to benefit from the program.

The course is free, self-paced, and available online 24 hours a day, allowing families to work through the material on their own schedule.
